Tonya Nicole

SINGER/ACTRESS

Tonya Nicole (born Tonya Nicole Smalls-Williams) is a multi-hyphenate force — national recording artist, songwriter, actress, show creator/producer, educator, wife, and proud mother of two — whose artistry moves effortlessly between spotlight and soul light. A Holly Hill, South Carolina native now shining in Charleston, Tonya embodies rhythm, resilience, and realness in every performance, whether she’s center stage or center mic.

With a B.A. in Theatre Arts from the College of Charleston and as a core ensemble member of PURE Theatre, Tonya commands attention with a presence as magnetic as her voice. She’s graced the stage in powerful theatrical roles and musical performances alike, her gift for storytelling seamlessly blending the drama of theatre with the emotion of song.

Tonya’s musical journey began at age four, singing in her father’s church, where she first discovered the healing power of harmony. Though small in stature, her voice is a symphony — the force of a brass section with the finesse of a jazz soloist. Her sound flows through Jazz, R&B, Funk, and Gospel, weaving lush harmonies with lyrical storytelling — retro-cool with a modern twist, like vinyl spun into digital form.

She made her recording debut in 2021 with the sultry and introspective “LIMBO,” followed by the sweet summer groove “COTTON CANDY,” solidifying her as a rising powerhouse. Her 2022 EP, #1996KindaLove, paid homage to her 20-year marriage, a smooth fusion of R&B, jazz, and hip-hop that reminded listeners that love can still groove in 4/4 time.

A cancer survivor and health advocate, Tonya turns her triumphs into testimony, earning her Charleston City Paper’s R&B Artist of the Year recognition. She’s also shared the stage with some of music’s finest — Leela James, Felicia P. Fields,  Grammy-nominated Jazzmeia Horn, and 2x Grammy winner Quiana Parler of Ranky Tanky. Each performance amplifying her reputation as a soulful storyteller and commanding performer.

Now, Tonya is keeping the tempo high and the spotlight bright as the new host of Holy City Idol, the Carolinas’ freshest talent competition, where she uses her wit, warmth, and wisdom to inspire the next wave of performers. And coming Spring 2026, she will release her much-anticipated jazz album TRIBE — a deeply personal, soul-stirring celebration of rhythm, roots, and the community that has poured into her journey.

When she’s not performing, Tonya pours into the next generation as a theatre instructor with Engaging Creative Minds and PURE Theatre’s Education Department, reminding young artists that art isn’t just seen or heard — it’s felt.

Whether on stage, in the studio, or in the classroom, Tonya Nicole’s mission remains the same: to make people feel — love, joy, truth, and connection — through every story she tells and every note she sings. With her pen, her passion, and a voice that could melt the mic, Tonya Nicole continues to compose her legacy — one unforgettable performance at a time.
